How important is food for sustaining human life?

There is a lot of information from physiology and biology about the processes of food digestion and transformation in our bodies. Is there any studies showing that the food (together with water and breathing) is the only source for sustaining human life. You can die form hunger, but this is true for drug addicted and deprived.

    Food to turn into energy through respiration.
    Food of different kinds your cells organelles will not have any food to turn into energy through respiration.
