Is it bad to eat spicy food when you have a cold?

I read that spicy food (cayenne and such) can actually help with sinus problems and congestion; I don’t know if that would help a cold or not, but the point is I like spicy food. My mother always taught me to eat blander foods when you’re sick at all, even just with a cold - but will it really hurt to eat spicy soup or something? Can it help at all?
