What is an alternate food for betta fish besides the flakes?
May 26th, 2008 | by admin |Rachel P asked:
Are there any household items (fruits, veggies, etc.) that are good for, specifically betta, fish to eat? I also have to albino dwarf frogs that I have pellet food for but they mostly eat the fish flakes. Are there any grocery foods I can chop up and put in the tank for all of them or just the fish?

Bettas are carnivores, so there isn’t much in the way of fruits and veggies that interest them. I’ve had mine eat pieces of cooked green peas (with the skins removed) - this is something I feed mine on a weekly basis as a preventative for constipation (yes, fish can get constipated, and bettas are prone to this!).
If you’re looking for something to add some variety to their diet, you can always try to cultivate some mosquito larvae. Just set out a pan with water and put in a few leaves. If you’ve got mosquitos (adults) in your area, you’ll probably get some wigglers. Just be sure to use them before they metamorphose into biting adults.

Bloodworms, microworms, a little bit of beefheart but would balance this off with some veggies.

Mosquito larvae, some bloodworms and other meaty insects ( if youre thinking earthworms, wash it first)
